Best Post Workout Smoothie:

The Maca-Choc Booster

This smoothie is excellent after a work out. From the minute you take the first gulp, it will flow through your body like energised lava, hitting all the right spots, including that ding dong happy place on your palate as, despite all it’s super healthy ingredients, it tastes like a chocolate milkshake.

What you need (serves 1):

  • 1 ripe banana, peeled
  • 1 handful of kale, stalks removed (or baby spinach)
  • 2 tbsp. cacao powder
  • 2 tbsp. almond butter
  • 1-2 tsp. maca powder
  • 1 tsp. whole flaxseed
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 200ml coconut water

Once you’ve washed the kale, blend all the ingredients together until smooth. Add more liquid if necessary. On a hot day, add a few ice cubes to create that iced mocha feel.

Why it’s healthy:

Kale is a superfood providing calcium, iron and boosts of vitamins A, C and K. The flaxseeds provide essential fatty acids and further antioxidants to assist the body’s repair, whilst the nuts are a fantastic meat-free source of protein. Also, coconut water is a great way to replace electrolytes to speed up rehydration. All hail the Hemsley and Hemsley sisters, who have brought this addictive super smoothie into our lives.

Best Cleansing Juice

The Green Machine

Despite our best intentions it’s sometimes hard to do what we set out to do, isn’t it? Especially when it comes to a detox… Hands up those who have actually managed a full 4-week cleanse before without cheating? Don’t worry. We’ve got just the thing for you, if a cleansing drink is about as committed as you can get. The green machine cleansing juice is the perfect way to kick start the day if you feel like a little purification.

What you need (serves 2, 250ml each):

  • 3 celery stalks
  • 1 small fennel bulb
  • 1 handful of kale, stalks removed, or spinach
  • 2 small green apples
  • 1 small lemon or lime
  • 2 handfuls parsley leaves and stalks

Wash all ingredients and chop to fit juicer/nutribullet. Juice or blend all ingredients and stir well. If using the nutribullet, you may want to add water or coconut water to taste.

Why it’s healthy:

Filled with nourishing ingredients, this delicious juice is a great way to get your body’s mechanisms going, according to the Hemsley and Hemsley sisters. Parsley, fennel and celery are detoxifiers and lemons and limes aid digestion and are alkaline-forming in the body.

Best Cup O’ Sleep

The Sleepy Pie

How often do you get a really good night’s sleep – the kind where you have dried drool all over your chin? If it doesn’t happen that often, it may be that you have too much on your mind, that you are wired from the day’s events, or that little creatures called children are getting in the way of it. But there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of having a MEGAsnooze… including having a Sleepy Pie a few hours before bed.

What you need (serves 1):

  • ¼ cup cooked oatmeal
  • 2 dates
  • 12 cashew nuts
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 200ml almond milk

Add all ingredients together and blend, preferably with a nutribullet to give you the smoothest Cup O’ Sleep.

Why it’s healthy:

Dates, oats and cashews contain an important amino acid (tryptophan). It may sound like a baddie from a superhero movie, but tryptophan is actually really helpful as it releases the chemicals melatonin and serotonin in the brain, which in turn are invaluable when it comes to maintaining a healthy sleep cycle.

Best Breakfast Smoothie

The Fast Fig

Skipping breakfast has never been a good idea. You’ll only end up needing a boost of some sort a few hours later, and more likely than not you’ll go for the unhealthy kind. If you’re in a rush, make yourself a Fast Fig. Not only will it keep you going ‘til lunchtime, but you can pretty much drink it on the go.

What you need (serves 1):

  • 4 ripe figs
  • 3 heaped teaspoons buckwheat granola
  • 2 tbsp. plain coconut yoghurt
  • 1tsp bee pollen or honey
  • 400ml freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 3 or 4 ice cubes

Mix all ingredients together and blend for 90 seconds.

Why it’s healthy:

According to Tim Siadatan, chef-patron of London’s Trullo restaurant who invented this creation, this smoothie is the perfect way to start the day if you’re in a rush as it is rich in proteins, free amino acids and vitamin B.

Best Hangover Smoothie

The Hangover Cure

Developed by Superdanke!, Munich’s best juice and smoothie bar, the Hangover Cure recipe is one you’ll want to know this summer. Whether you’re dealing with the after effects of a festival or just a few too many rosés the night before, this concoction is bound to give you both your energy and your bounce back. Also works beautifully if you haven’t had a drink!

What you need (serves 1):

  • 1 handful of kale, stalks removed
  • 1/2 mango
  • A handful of grapes
  • Half an avocado
  • Half a banana
  • 100ml coconut water
  • 50ml almond milk
  • 1 tbsp. chia seeds

Why it’s healthy:

Kale has been a go-to remedy for dealing with a hangover for centuries. Even the Ancient Greeks used it in their drinks when they’d had a few too many. The chia seeds give you a much needed energy boost and the coconut water is perfect for rehydration, and replenishing your body with the salts and minerals it needs.
